Fabrication of pipe spools, concrete-embedded pipes, and wall sleeves with water stop collars

Learn about wall sleeves with water stop collars, an effective waterproofing solution for pipelines penetrating concrete walls in construction projects from Tan Dat Mechanical.

When constructing underground water tanks, fire protection water tanks, basements, or concrete walls, the pipe penetrations through walls require pipe spools & wall sleeves (sleeves, concrete-embedded pipes) to be installed before pouring concrete.

If this step is skipped or done incorrectly, water can easily seep along the pipe body — a technical error that is extremely difficult to fix later. This article will help you better understand the structure, applications, and important notes when ordering the custom-made fabrication of this product line at TAN DAT MECHANICAL.

What is a wall sleeve with a waterstop collar and its waterproofing role

A wall sleeve with a waterstop collar is a precisely machined steel or stainless steel pipe section welded with one or more circular steel rings fixed around the pipe body, commonly known as a waterstop collar.

When pouring concrete, this collar will be located at the center of the concrete wall, acting as a mechanical barrier. It breaks the gap and completely prevents water from seeping along the outer surface of the wall-penetrating pipe. Both ends of the pipe can be left plain, beveled for welding, or pre-welded with flanges to facilitate the subsequent installation of pipelines, valves, or flexible joints.

Sleeve and rigid pipe product lines fabricated at Tan Dat

To meet the diverse technical requirements of industrial and civil construction projects, Tan Dat Mechanical accepts custom-made fabrication according to drawings for the following typical products:

  • Wall sleeves with waterstop collars attached with one or two flanged ends.
  • Concrete-embedded pipes and culvert pipes manufactured according to the actual dimensions of the project.
  • Wall-penetrating pipes and stainless steel sleeve pipes for technical walls requiring corrosion resistance.
  • Steel or stainless steel rigid pipes with flanges, precisely machined according to design drawings.

Important notes when ordering wall sleeve fabrication

To ensure that the installed product fits properly, meets technical standards, and maximizes waterproofing efficiency, customers need to provide the following parameters when placing an order:

  • Concrete wall thickness: This parameter directly determines the overall length of the sleeve.
  • Pipe diameter: Determine the size of the passing pipe and the connection type at both ends (plain end, welded end, or flanged end).
  • Position and size of the waterstop collar: The collar is usually positioned at the middle of the concrete wall thickness along with an appropriate collar diameter size.
  • Manufacturing material: Depending on the operating environment, choose galvanized steel, anti-rust painted steel, or stainless steel material (suitable for clean water tanks and high-humidity environments).

Frequently asked questions

How wide should the water stop collar be?
Typically, the collar is several dozen millimeters wider than the outer diameter of the pipe and thick enough to be rigid; specific dimensions follow the design drawing.
Should wall sleeves be made of stainless steel or steel?
For clean water and drinking water tanks, stainless steel should be used; for fire-fighting and wastewater tanks, galvanized steel or painted steel can be used to optimize costs.
